JST ERATO and CREST Joint Symposium,

JST ERATO and CREST Joint Symposium
There is becoming a construction boom in advanced light source facilities, including synchrotron radiations and neutron sources around the world, even under unfavorable economical conditions. These trends are reflection from the common recognition that these advanced light sources are becoming increasingly critical to the study of organic materials and biological material. In fact, at SPring-8, a new beam line dedicated for soft materials is now under construction and it will utilize one of the most powerful X-ray for scattering measurements. Additionally, as the next-generation light source, XFEL (X-ray Free Electron Laser) facilities are being developed at several places in these days. In the near future, femtosecond and coherent X-ray source will be available in softmaterial research and should broaden the horizon of advanced soft material research and technology.

Although using small-angle scattering, the research communities of biological and organic materials have different historical background and thus, especially in Japan, scientific interaction between these two fields are not always active. One of the important future technology and industry should lie on the interdisciplinary area between bio- and synthetic materials such as biocompatible materials, drug delivering systems, and tissue-engineering. On the other hand, the surface structure and properties of soft materials have been paid great attention because of its importance in fundamental science and functional applications. The surface scattering techniques have been developed recent years not only in static but also dynamic mode. The aim of this symposium is to organize the discussion among global-level researchers working on the next-generation synchrotron radiation science, biophysics and supramolecular science, modern surface science in soft materials, and industrial applications of neutron and synchrotron source. This symposium will bring us a future direction in applications of the advanced light sources into soft materials science and technology.

"2nd Circular"

Kazuo Sakurai, Professor
Rie Kunitake, Secretary
Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, The University of Kitakyushu
1-1 Hibikino, Wakamatsu, Kitakyushu 808-0135, Japan
Phone: 81+93-695-3294, Fax: 81+93-695-3390
